President Donald Trump said Monday that sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh are “totally political.”
“For people to come out of the woodwork from 36 years ago and 30 years ago and — never mentioned it, all of a sudden it happens — in my opinion, it’s totally political. It’s totally political,” the president said. “There’s a chance that this could be one of the single most unfair, unjust things to happen to a candidate for anything.”
Trump’s comments, delivered Monday at the United Nations, were his first on the subject since a second woman leveled allegations of sexual assault against Kavanaugh. Deborah Ramirez, a Colorado woman who attended Yale University with Kavanaugh, told The New Yorker in an article published Sunday that the Supreme Court nominee exposed his penis to her and touched her with it at a party when they were freshmen.
Ramirez’s accusation follows that of Christine Blasey Ford, who came forward a little more than a week ago with an allegation that Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed and groped her during a drunken house party while the two were in high school.
Both women, who are registered Democrats, have said that their decisions to come forward isn’t politically motivated.
Trump, who is in New York for the United Nations General Assembly this week, said he continues to support his Supreme Court nominee.
“Judge Kavanaugh is an outstanding person and I am with him all the way,” Trump said Monday.
