Darnell Woolfolk was pleasantly surprised when Army’s uniforms for Saturday’s Army-Navy game were revealed to the football team and Corps of Cadets on Sunday night.
The long anticipated release of the Nike uniforms in honor of the 1st Infantry Division may have topped last year’s 10th Mountain Division-themed threads and equipment.
The black jerseys and pants are highlighted by red Nike swooshes. The helmet and cleats feature a red No. 1 in tribute to the division. The unit was originally called the First Expeditionary Division in World War I.
“I think it’s (the uniform) awesome,” Woolfolk said. “It wasn’t what I was expecting. The sleeves on it are really cool and the red incorporated onto the cleats and all the Nike swooshes are awesome. I can’t wait to wear it.”
Nicknamed the “Big Red One,” the First Division’s 28th Infantry defeated Germany in the Battle of Cantigny in France for the first American victory in World War I.
Part of the First Division still lives on with Army’s football team. Players touch a plaque with George Marshall’s famous World War II quote, “I want an officer for a secret and dangerous mission. I want an Army football player” before every game. Marshall served as the First Division’s operations officer in the Battle of Cantigny.
