Megan Harless is a seasoned military spouse, a fierce PCS reform advocate, and the host of the “PCS Like a Pro” Show. She is definitely a professional mover and shaker.
I met Megan Harless years ago, as she was serving the military community through education, advocacy, and raising awareness. Her Facebook page, “PCS Like a Pro – Your Smooth Move,” is where you can find quick tips and resource connections for moving season and it has over 23,000 members!
On her weekly webcast, she hosts members of the moving industry, like Shea Sines with BoxOps, and other PCS professionals who can share vital information about the PCS process.
Megan has also put together a PCS Binder to help military families stay organized through our multiple moves – PCS Like a Pro Guide.
Megan is on a mission to provide the essential knowledge our military community needs in order to navigate the PCS process as painlessly as possible, while also providing resources, insight, and information about thriving in transition.
Megan has been working on PCS reform since 2018. When an open letter Megan wrote for her then blog, Military Spouse Chronicles, turned into Change.org petition, she began working to bring stakeholders together to improve the PCS process and experience. The open letter detailed military family grievances, like receiving broken household good, lack of accountability and transparency, and an overall request to do better. You can read it here. The petition now boasts over 100,000 signatures.
As an educator, she begins with teaching military families about the current regulations, requirements, and policies affecting the PSC process. Families need to know who to call when they need assistance, how to navigate the claims process, or sharing with them how to connect with specific offices when a move goes wrong.
Additionally, she educates the moving industry, the people and companies who have a direct impact on our moving experience. By sharing the military experience with moving companies, financing professionals, and realtors, Megan can communicate the importance of empathy and due process.
In a recent interview with Megan, she highlights the data behind our military moves. The average person will move approximately 11.4 times in their lifetime. In contrast, a military family will easily exceed that amount over a 20-year career. The average person might move 18 miles from their hometown of origin, but a military family moves hundreds to thousands of miles away from one location to the next.
“Education is one of the biggest pieces of how I can advocate for my community. Movers need to know why we need our things to arrive on time. If they don’t, our children will start school with just the clothes on their back. Our real estate and lending companies need to understand why we need to close on time. We need to because, otherwise, our household goods have to go into storage. I just want these industries to learn how to better serve and support our communities.”
