6 Special Military Spouse Benefits You Probably Haven't Thought Of

We all know that being a military spouse comes with its own set of challenges. It’s so easy dwell on the negative a little bit too much. Especially when it seems like our good friend Mr. Murphy has worn out his welcome, anything that can go wrong will go wrong . But there are also some AMAZING military spouse benefits that come along with military life. 1. Friends from around the world Where else can you live in a small town and have friends from all ends of the world? Step onto even the smallest military base and you’ll meet people from everywhere! And once you make those priceless connections, you have someone to call when you need to know how to grill corn in the south, boil lobsters in New England, and find rain boots for the PCS move to Washington from Jacksonville. These connections are military spouse benefits because you never know when it will be your hometown advice that comes in handy! 2. People you know everywhere you go Being a part of the military community is a military spouse benefit. It makes the world a whole lot smaller. I can remember growing up hearing my father say “What a small Navy!” when we would PCS and he’d run into Sailors he served with 10, 15 years before. I learned this firsthand on my deployment a couple years ago. I was going to be away from all of my family for the first time ever over the holidays and we were porting in a foreign country that didn’t really celebrate Christian holidays. Imagine how great it was when I realized a friend from my home town happened to be stationed there and was willing to open his apartment to me and my merry band of misfits for Christmas Eve dinner ( here's that story! ) It may be hard to say "see you later" to friends as PCS move season comes around but you never know when you’ll run into them again…or when you’ll need an amazing place to vacation and they have a couch to crash on! 3. Travel to new places While we’re talking vacations, let’s take a moment to thank the military for sending us places that we never thought we could go. This is a HUGE benefit for military spouse! I have friends who were stationed in Germany and when they got those orders the wife was terrified. She didn’t know the language, she didn’t want to leave home. By the end of their 3 years there she didn’t want to come back for anything other than to shop at Target again. She had so much fun being able to explore Europe due to being stationed right in the middle of everything. She said she wouldn’t trade that experience for anything. 4. People want to recruit/hire military spouses I know often military spouses feel like they get lost in the shuffle of PCS moves and deployments, and their careers and education has to take a back burner to their spouse’s military track. But there is a benefit to being a military spouse in this aspect too! There are programs like MyCAA that offer grants and scholarships for military spouses. Not only that, some colleges are willing to give military dependents tuition as discounted rates just because they want to support military families in any way they can. (start with these Military Spouse Friendly Schools ) Not on the education track? That’s ok! There are programs for the budding entrepreneur too! The Small Business Association has a Patriot Loan program to help veterans (and spouses) get business loans more easily. So if there is something you have your heart set on doing, don’t let the military tell you it’s impossible! 5. The Uniform I don’t know about you but I’m thankful that the military makes clothes shopping so much easier. This is a great military spouse benefit - my husband (and me for that matter) both know exactly what we’re wearing every single day we go to work. It makes getting ready in the morning so much faster. Leaves us time for a little making out before heading to base and I am thankful for that! I’ll even take piles of uniforms in the laundry room and boots under the dining room table if it means I get to check out my hubby in his camis the day summer sleeves get rolled! 6. Falling in love, again and again And to me the biggest benefit of being a military spouse is that I get to fall in love, have first kisses, and first dates over and over again. Every time one of us returns from deployment, every time we manage to get leave and sneak off on a weekend away, we get to reconnect and remember just what it was that made us fall in love with each other. Through the stress of dual military careers, through the headache of every day life, we are reminded that our marriage is the bigger picture and the military is just a chapter in our life. We soak up every moment as if it’s going to be the last and nothing can replace the memories we get to make thanks to the military. Before you go...
