6. Follow up
“Whenever you meet someone new, or get in contact with someone new, it’s always good to follow up. While they may forget you after an event or forget to contact you, after a clever and relevant follow up, you can be sure that they remember you and that they know precisely who you are. You can lay the ground for the follow up when you first meet them. For instance, tell them that you are a writer and ask if they would like to see a sample, then promise to send it,” Says Juno Banks, career specialist at BigAssignments and Assignment Service.
How To Do It: For example, if the person is sold during your elevator pitch and asks for samples of your work. Send them on the next business day before noon, as a follow up. If it’s a different situation without tangible creatives, it’s still okay to follow up – even just to thank someone for great conversation – a handwritten thank you note goes a long way!
7. Attend events
Attending events is a great way to meet new people. There will be many professionals from different industries there and you’ll be able to speak to different people, researching your opportunities and expanding your network.
People are usually communicative on these events and they will appreciate a good conversation.
How To Do It: Follow groups and individuals in your relevant field on Facebook and see what events they are attending – not in a like a creepy-stalker way, but in a I-want-to-be-successful-like-you way.
8. Meet other military spouses
“Military spouses are usually very nice to each other and can help each other thrive. You can possibly get a working opportunity or a mentorship this way. If you are willing to move forward with your career, you should definitely invest some time into getting to know other military spouses near you as well as those who live a bit further away. This will allow you to have contacts no matter where you move,” says Manny Kahuna, a business coach at Studydemic and StudentWritingServices.
How To Do It: So we already mentioned the social media networking, but get out there for some face-to-face time! See what groups are going on at your duty station, and if you don’t find any – start one and see who comes!
9. Volunteer
Military life allows for many opportunities for volunteering. Volunteering, in turn, can provide you with a chance of meeting new people and possibly finding your purpose in life through helping others. This is also great material to fill those “resume gaps” we all know too well…
How To Do It: Other military spouses volunteer too and they can get you into this world easily, so see point 8 and get out there to meet people!
10. Throw an event yourself
Finally, once you expand your networks enough, you can start throwing some events yourself. You can have theme nights, charity nights and so on. There are a lot of options here and you can probably get the most attention from people who can give you opportunities.
How To Do It: Start with just inviting a career-driven person you admire to get a cup of coffee with you. It’s low-commitment, but it can open the door!
Being a military spouse can be both fun and daunting. But, you have a lot of opportunities of finding your life’s purpose and career. Follow these ten steps to get you headed toward success. If you don’t know where to begin, start with applying even just one these “How To Do Its” and see how it goes!
