The Volunteer
Hard work doesn’t always mean a big paycheck. For some, the rewarding part of working is actually helping others rather than depositing some cash in the bank. “I have always enjoyed people, being around them and helping them,” Jenn Row said. “My Marine was working long hours and I needed something to do. I started off in the Key Volunteer program and eventually found my way to LINKS. My drive was fueled by my passion to help others.” Not only does volunteer work keep Row busy, but it also helps her relieve stress while her husband is gone and allows her to build strong support team. “Everything we encounter as military families is stressful, but how we choose to spend our time giving back to our community should not be stressful.
Volunteering, meeting new people, and helping others took away from the stress of having two small children and the off hours a Special Duty Assignment brings,” she said. But it also comes with a big commitment. Others rely on her, so it is important she keeps her schedule on track. Her advice echoes Carithers’ advice: find something you love and are passionate about, “That will give you the boost to get out there and give back,” she said. “For those already volunteering, look for growth. Find the next step and take it, don’t get complacent, always strive to grow personally and mentor those starting their journey. If we do all that with a passionate and genuine heart, our community will continue to do great things and be a pillar of strength for our nation,” Row said. “And yes, I do believe our military families have that much of an impact!”
