Here are a few words from Hero Care Packages CEO, Jack Wray!

When we pulled into port in the Navy, sailors who had been at sea for months would wait for hours in line just to see if they got mail, rather than go out on liberty in a foreign port. But as an officer, I was always broken-hearted when I saw some of my sailors who didn’t get packages– or when they did, the packages often contained things that they couldn’t use or didn’t quite want. So I tried to figure out why.

Over the years, I talked to family and friends to find out what the obstacles to sending packages were. The biggest problem? Sending a care package to a military installation is just too much work. Between waiting in line at the post office, paying $18 for the “military discount” shipping option, navigating regulations and customs forms, and gathering materials for the care package, it wasn’t easy to do.

And even when loved ones could send things, most people didn’t know what to send. They’d send chocolate to a soldier or marine in the desert, non-regulation gear to Air Force members staying on an overseas base, or perishable items to a Navy sailor. But every service has different needs, requirements, and regulations.

As sad as my fellow sailors were when to get these things, they couldn’t fault the well-intentioned package sender. Those back home just wanted to do their part.

I started this company to provide a one-stop solution for anyone looking to send a care package, and eliminate all of these obstacles in pursuit of our ultimate mission: to get as many care packages into the hands of as many service members as possible.

We help people in 3 ways:

1) Military regulations and shipping experts: One of the biggest impediments to sending military care packages is knowing (a) what to send and (b) how to do it. Given the many regulations governing the military, and the extra shipping requirements for military addresses, we pride ourselves on being experts to ensure the care packages arrive safely with the service member.

2) One-stop shop for military care packages: Looking to build your own and add a personal touch? Our blog covers all of that, with articles on what to put in a care packagehow to mail one yourself, and how to navigate military regulations. Don’t have time to build you own? We have you covered with our-premade care packages. Not sure what to send? We’ll build a care package for your Hero, based on your guidance and our knowledge of what service members like. Don’t have someone to send care packages to but still want to help? We partner with USOs to donate care packages around the world. In short, we want to make it as easy as possible to get more care packages to more service members, even if it’s not buying a care package from us.

3) Personalized Card Exchanges: In each care package, we include two cards. The first, from the sender to the service member, is written by the sender with no length limits. (Sometimes, we get letters that would take pages, and require multiple cards to fit!) You can also include a picture with the card. The second card is a pre-addressed & stamped return postcard with the sender’s address already on it. It makes it easy for the Hero to write a quick note back to the sender to say thanks, and simply drop it in the mail. It’s all part of our personalized touch, because a care package is supposed to be an expression of love and support from those back home, and what better way to do so than old-fashioned letters?
