3. At least I got this killer photo.
My husband came home for R&R and we decided that we would visit our favorite beach. Because I’m a professional photographer, I toted my camera along in hopes of getting some shots to help commemorate our trip. As we arrived at our very favorite beach I got the bright idea to set my camera on my trusty tripod and take a selfie with my husband. The tide at the time was not reaching even remotely close to where I had my camera set up. I figured out my settings and set off to get my photos, which I did, and they were exactly what I hoped for. I got greedy and decided to take one more shot. But of course, anything that can go wrong, will go wrong… Right as I reached my husband I turned to see the most intense wave I have EVER seen. I turned to race that devilish heap of water but alas it was in vain. The wave stretched its middle finger to just reach the bottom of my tripod giving it a little push, which resulted in a long dramatic, and slow motion fall. Luckily the camera was not submerged and I reached it fairly quickly. All my photos were saved, but the camera body itself and my lens were not so lucky. The best part? My insurance does not cover water damage if it is the result of submersion (even if it wasn’t really submerged.)
The silver lining: everything was fixed, I got a new camera body, and the pictures I got before the Great Fall of 2014 were priceless.
There you have it folks, a few misfortunes to give your misfortunes company. Murphy’s Law and I have met a few times now. I’m still standing, and I even learned a few valuable lessons, gained a new appreciation for various different groups of people and most importantly I was molded into a more resilient individual. I believe Lemony Snicket said it best when he reasoned, “What might seem to be a series of unfortunate events may in fact be the first steps of a journey.” Our journey, no matter how unlucky we may think it has become, is one that in essence is rewarding and character building (and of course warrants awesome stories.) Now, please do a girl a solid and share some of your mishaps and some silver linings.
