4 Tips to See Practical Potential in Every PCS

Wandering the streets of housing brought us to a place of great contemplation: “How about this blue house, or this yellow house, or this blue house, or this yellow house…”

I have always been drawn to architecture and I love spaces that are a natural fit for entertaining. When I walk into a space I desire that the guests that enter feel as though they have come home. The recipe that I love to follow is one of soft neutral tones with a pop of color especially in the art work.

For most of my husband’s career we have lived on base which has been a wonderful blessing because it has enabled us to be close to our Air Force community, however does not always lend itself to having a floor plan or style of architecture that would fit the style that I would choose. With that in mind I have adapted over the years a decor that is transitional that will work in most spaces.

With some thought and the application of some real method you can have a lovely home that is welcoming, transitional and practical while in the military while saving for your dream down the line.

Invest in quality transitional pieces:

We made the decision to purchase quality pieces such as a sofa, tables, etc. that are modular so that each time we move we can ensure it would fit into most spaces.  Tables (such as dining) that have leaves are wonderful because dining room sizes vary.  The table we have allows us to store the leaf within the table so that we don’t have to worry about it weathering in the garage (We had the fortune of finding ours on Marketplace which I recommend as a great resource).

Making good use of peel and stick wallpaper:

Using peel and stick wallpaper especially in base housing is a fantastic way to modernize and personalize your home without causing any damage to the walls.

Seeing Potential in Vintage:

Wandering the halls of boutiques and antique malls in  each installation we have lived has proven to be such a great, economical way to bring quality, and a fresh layer of style to our home. Not only is it fun finding new treasures, it is also a wonderful way to acclimate yourself to your new community.

Create timeless design:

Often we can get caught up in the design trend but I find that if I build a foundation of a classic pallet in my design style and then pop in an accent piece or two that is on trend I bring a fresh layer to my home, however don’t have to re decorate each time I PCS, which is impractical and not fiscally wise. Design styles that are clean lined and organic will bring beautiful depth to your home anywhere you go.

Think of your home as a thermometer and you are the thermostat. How do you want to set the temperature? Creating a warm, and welcoming environment that will make you and your family feel loved can be accomplished no matter where you are and no matter where you go.
