1. Create a Google business account
It does not matter what business you have, create one. This account will allow you to mention your business name, talk about what you stand for, and you can change your address whenever you want. Take advantage of this and ask for reviews from your faithful customers because when it comes time to move, you can change that address and within a week, it will already start to register and show up on Google search engines.
2. Change your social media platform
I found out we were moving from Pearl Harbor to Norfolk in July of 2018 and immediately changed my account information to match Virginia, adding Virginia to my business name, changing my location, and making the “big” moving announcement. For Instagram, I started to use hashtags such as #virginiaweddingphotographer to help get my platform traction.
3. Connect with people in the new area
Finding other entrepreneurs, venues, and artist in your field in your new town will help. Join Facebook groups to find other photographers or consultants. There are Facebook pages for all business owners that have monthly meet-ups, parties, etc. that will help you get your name out there. Take advantage of that!
4. Create and host Facebook Ads
Yeah, I know… you cringed. Why spend money on something you think does not work? I am telling you, ads work. Before I even moved to Virginia, I booked 3 weddings using Facebook ads and I paid a total of $68. It’s all about what you say, whom you target, and where you market. So, try to invest and find someone who is a pro at them and ask for their help.
5. Host a giveaway in the new town
Everyone loves something free. It’s in our nature. So, when you move, create some sort of contest or giveaway. I am not saying “the person who recommends the most clients to me, get a free bottle of lotion.” No, don’t even ask for “likes,” that just makes you sound desperate.
Instead, start with, “I am new to the area and want to start finding yummy local spots to eat at! I am giving away this free bottle of lotion, all you have to do is comment what your favorite restaurant is!” or something along that line! For photographers, give away a free mini session. Look, all it takes is ONE happy person from the new area to recommend you to get business rolling, but you have to give first and show that you care and are generally interested in learning about the new area!
Listen, boss ladies (and dudes)… that fear you are feeling every day as a business owner, whether you are doing so well or so poorly, is something that each of us feels every single day. You do not want to go back to that normal 9-5 job and your energy and empowerment and sacrifice is noticed!
I see you, the world sees you, whether you know it or not.
Moving is hardcore one of the worse things a business owner has to go through. Finding that Facebook group, booking that first client, and finally getting your name out there in your new town is so worth the hard work you have put into it. Do not give up just because you are moving again.
Keep pushing and keep trying and everything will fall into place. I promise.
