Beyond the Ice
Ashley’s passions extend beyond the ice. Living close to the beach (she trains in Artesia, Calif.), she loves standup paddle boarding, recently took up bike riding and is trying to learn how to play the guitar.
After her competitive skating career, Ashley hopes to enter broadcasting in some form. “I’d love to be able to stay involved in the sport and perhaps commentate,” she says.
Speaking to today’s military kids, Ashley recommends: “Find something you love and stick with it. My dad had an interesting career; he was always gone and I never knew where he was off to. Having skating was that welcome distraction from worrying about what my dad was dealing with. It was one constant I had no matter what. Find something you love, whether it’s drawing, playing music, playing a sport or drama at school. Find one passion and stick with it. It’ll make everything else so much more manageable.”
