How to Create Your Own Personal Guide To Life

There is a line in “27 Dresses” where Judy Greers’ characters is talking about her moral compass not always being so great, but even she can tell when something isn’t quite right.

If you’ve seen the movie, you know her moral compass tends to direct her towards too much alcohol and men who are fun, but not hardly marriage material. My compass is a bit different than hers but it got me to thinking…what guides my compass to due north? What is my personal GPS that directs me towards my goals? What drives me to make the decisions I do?

Want to know why I don’t whistle? Because when I was younger my very Catholic Nana told me it made the Virgin Mary cry. She also told me when I was in college that I needed to find a nice boy to marry, one that treats me well and not just in bed. She taught me that even though I was convinced my sister should be returned to the hospital my parents brought her home from, that goofy kid would actually turn out to be my best friend. My grandmother taught me about baking, knitting, and sex. The lessons she taught me and her voice in my head has been a guiding force for most of my life. Even now, 9 months after she passed away, I can still hear her when I’m struggling to handle the changes coming as I un-geobachelor for the first time in four years.
