Dear Sally,
My husband deploys for the first time very soon. I support him 100%, but of course I am worried and nervous about him going and I will miss him so much! He, on the other hand, is excited! It’s like he is pumped up and ready to go and can’t wait to leave! It feels like he is not upset about leaving me at all, and I am devastated. I just want to spend these last weeks with him not thinking about where he is going and focusing on the time we have left together. I understand it is his job, but how can he be so happy to be going to war?
Dejected Before Deployment
Dear Dejected,
There is a reason that many spouses call the military “the other woman”. Just when you think you are THE most important thing in your husband’s life, she gets her snares into him and before you know it, she is in bed with him more than you are. I can totally understand how you are feeling. It makes zero sense to a spouse who has never served in the military that anyone would be excited to go into a combat zone. It is impossible to understand why they would want to leave the comforts of home, their loved ones and everything they know. And it is very hurtful to think that they are not devastated to leave you.
But here is where I am going to offer up a little dose of tough love: This really isn’t about you.
In fact, I am going to suggest that you take a cue from your husband… and start getting excited about this deployment as well.
