Dear Opioid Epidemic,
Do you remember me? Nah, you probably won’t because you have been too busy messing with other people’s lives to even think about me. Well, let me refresh your memory. We met 23 years ago when my only brother became obsessed with you back in Puerto Rico. I am not sure how or when you guys met, but the moment you got into his life, you messed him up completely. After your path crossed him, he was never the same.
After meeting you, all he could do was think about you. His days started and ended either with you by his side, or with you in his mind. Just in case you are wondering, he wasn’t in love with you. Nah, he wasn’t, so don’t feel flattered. He was just obsessed with the false love that you provided him. You trapped him with your artificial smile and with the fake sense of happiness that you brought into his life every time you were with him.
Oh, boy! If you only knew how much I hated you, and how much I wish he had never met you.
Well, in case you are wondering why you have not heard from him in almost 12 years, let me be the one to tell you that he is dead. Yes, he is dead. The love he had for you killed him. Your false love took him away from us, from his parents, from his daughters, and from me. He was my only brother and you took him away from me. Do you know how that feels? Ha! Who am I kidding? How would you know if you have never cared for anyone other than yourself, and your obsession with ruining people’s lives?
When my brother died, I seriously thought I was never going to hear from you again until I came back from Africa after my husband retired from the U.S Army and I heard about you again, but this time in the news. Yes, you were all over the news and not for good reasons. When I met you, I knew you were bad news, but in a million years I would have ever imagined that you were going to turn into such a monster. A monster with only one goal… to destroy people’s lives.
