How We Went to Hawaii For Free

If you are reading this, then you too want to go to Hawaii for free. Am I right?

Okay, so to be 100% honest everything about to be written is from my husband’s brain because I am not good with all this stuff.

Fun Fact: I didn’t own a credit card or have credit at all when J and I got married. Thank you J for everything and building me a credit score and teaching me to wisely pay them off each month.

Also, this may not be the best deal for someone that isn’t military because of the yearly fee, but it’s a win win if you are military.

*Please be aware, this is only beneficial if you use the credit card as you would your debit card*

First step. Get the American Express personal platinum card.

This is a $550 a year card, BUT if you are military it is FREE.

Next Step. Spend $5000 in 3 months. This seems like a lot, but just put everything on your credit card that you would normally use your debit card for and then pay off the credit card! After you spend $5000 in 3 months you get 60,000 reward points.

(To prevent yourself from losing money and spending it on unnecessary stuff, use the American Express card on things you normally pay for: some bills, groceries, etc. Doing it this way makes it like you are basically getting points for things you would do normally throughout the months.)

Third step. To get the best deal, transfer the American Express points to Hawaiian Miles or other transfer partners with the best deal available at the time.

Fourth step. Book your free flight to Hawaii! Seems easy enough!

*This does not include hotel stay or activities done in Hawaii. This is just a good option when you are already planning a vacation and want to save money*

We used a regular cashback card to pay for our hotel!

Other benefits of using an American Express Card

  1. $200 Airline Credit per year
  2. $200 in Uber credit per year
  3. Access to Priority Pass/American Express Airport Lounges
