3. “History has its eyes on you.”
Perhaps one of the most conspicuous messages relayed through the musical is the importance of our legacies. Each song introduces us to characters, circumstances and choices, all of which have influenced history as we know it. We are reminded that though our actions may only seem relevant to the present, their consequences could hold a lasting significance.
4. We all have a shot.
A “bastard, orphan, son of the whore” immigrant, with nothing in his pockets grew up to be a “hero and a scholar.” In the very first song Hamilton proclaims, “My name is Alexander Hamilton, and there’s a million things I haven’t done but just you wait.” Evidence of the “American dream” is undeniable in Hamilton’s life story and sets a precedent for anyone who is willing to work for success.
5. We are who we are because of those who came before us.
In the military community we often reflect on the long-standing notion of sacrifice that those before us have so bravely exhibited. Hamilton’s story walks hand in hand with this ideology.
“Every American experiment, sets a precedent,” and it started with a slew of brave men, their families and a will to provide those around them with a greater practice of freedom and liberty. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s masterpiece allows us to bridge a 200+ year old gap and connect, no matter our race, gender, political affiliation or class, with our own American origin.
So, Hamilton, thank you for telling “our” story. Excuse me while I go enter the ticket lottery for the 2,344th time.
