3) FILL YOUR HOME WITH THINGS YOU LOVE
Most military homes are an eclectic collection of decorating pieces that reflect the many places we have lived. I decorate with photos – lots of them. It is comforting to me to see the faces of my loved ones around me each and every day, especially now that we are so far apart. But in my home you will also find jars of shellls, and hometown sports memorabilia. These things remind me of a place I used to call home and of our future, since it is our plan to return there when we retire in a few years. Decorate your home with items that remind you of where you want to be as a reminder that this duty station is not forever.
4) DON’T FORCE IT
It’s OK to hate where you are currently living. Acknowledging it doesn’t mean that you are a whiner or that you are ungrateful. It means you are human. Everyone has their own idea of beauty and what feels like home to them. Trying to slap a smile on your face or pretend you aren’t miserable for years can really wear on you. Accept that you are not thrilled, and you will do what you can to make it bearable, and that you will be really glad when this chapter is closed and you are on the road to your next duty station!
