MILITARY HOUSING
PRO: Much like renting, military housing comes with a safety net when things go wrong. You’re not going to be paying repairs out of pocket which allows you the peace of mind to feel safe in your home. And for now military housing comes with utilities paid as well so you don’t need to panic when it’s time to crank up the AC that your electric bill is going to break the bank. It’s nice to know that all your living expenses are taken care of each month. One less thing to stress!
CON: In some areas the BAH is higher than the typical rental so if you live in housing you may be giving up money that could go towards something else. For me, if I lived in housing here, I’d be losing out on money because my rent and utilities are relatively low so my BAH covers all of them plus some. Also, some locations don’t have housing that can accommodate large families so kids end up sharing rooms when before they had their own space. And of course there are also pet regulations so Fido might not be as welcome on the new base as he was on the last.
No matter which route you choose to follow it might be wise to talk to families in the area before you relocate. They are going to be your best resource on housing options because they are already living there and know the ropes. Reaching out to spouse groups for your new command will help you make the best decisions possible if you need to make a quick trip to scope out the area before moving trucks arrive.
