The Forgotten New Year’s Resolutions

Think back to January. I bet you were one of those people who had the best of intentions upon the New Year of creating a New You. You were going to get organized. You were going to cook 3 homemade meals a week. You were going to use the treadmill for more than just hanging your clothes on. But like so many others, you let those resolutions slide as life got in the way.

Now we’re a third of the way through the year, you stop to pick up meals more than you turn on the stove, you can’t see the closet floor because it’s covered in all the cast off clothes that you’d intended to organize in labeled bins in your mission to channel your inner Martha Stewart. It’s not too late to get back on track for the rest of the year!

Make A List

The best way to achieve a goal is to write it down. Put it somewhere you’re going to see often. I keep a running list at work of to-do tasks, I have one on my fridge of the things that need to be picked up on my next Whole Foods run, and there is a running list on my phone of upcoming appointments and trips to visit the hubby. If I don’t have a list, it’s not getting done. So start there! Prioritize what goals you want to knock out and put an end date on it so you don’t just have open ended ideas to someday get around to.

Get The Supplies

You can accomplish anything if you have the right tools. Just look at the miracles McGuiver accomplished with nothing more than a gum wrapper and a paperclip! If your goal is to get into the gym more then it’s time to invest in appropriate shoes, comfortable clothes, and a good pair of wireless headphones so you don’t get tangled up while trying to run. Are you trying to organize the house? Target is your best friend! They have Rubbermaid in every size and organizers for every closet or drawer in your home. Maybe it’s meal prep you’re trying to get more on track with. Start talking to your friends about their favorite make-ahead meals and figure out what supplies you need to freeze or store pre-cooked meals to streamline dinner time.

Find A Friend

Anything is easier when you have help. If you know your friends have also fallen behind on their New Years plans this is the time to be the encouraging cheerleader they need to get back on track. And to enlist them in supporting you. We have a wonderful network of military spouses to go to when things get tough so why not look to them for this?

No matter what tips or tools you use to accomplish your goals the biggest thing you need to do is…just do it! Put your mind to finishing what you started. I know how hard it is to get into the gym. I know how easy it is to dial up the pizza place on a busy day. I know how quickly organizing can get overwhelming. And that is okay every one in awhile! But I also know that once I start on my goals and see progress I’m so thankful that I started. So take a deep breath, think about what was so important to you at the start of the year and get back on track. You’ll be happy you did!
