My husband has proudly served in the US Air Force for 20 years and the same day he retired he secured a job as Project Manager at The Military Editor® Agency, a rapidly growing writing and editing agency catering exclusively to military authors and military-related manuscripts. And I am the owner and CEO of the company. Yes: I hired my military retiree husband before other companies could. The decision to join forces as professionals came naturally because we both knew what we would bring to the table.
As a military spouse, I have witnessed 15 years of my husband’s career and saw firsthand his commitment, dedication, and work ethic. I supported him throughout the many years he spent working as Project Manager and making his way through the ranks. I accompanied him on his many special duty assignments that made us travel the world, where we both gained insightful and invaluable work experience in our respective roles. And I was incredibly proud when he landed an internship through the SkillBridge Program that allowed him to refine his project management skills and learn more about what it takes to run a successful business.
And he was there when a PCS cut my young career as a teacher of English as a second language short, which eventually forced me to find the courage to go after my dream job: writing and editing. He supported me when I landed my first big ghostwriting project almost a decade ago and the many others that followed. He celebrated with me when major publishing companies, including HarperCollins Leadership, offered me editing and ghostwriting projects of high-profile clients. And he pushed me to take that leap of faith to found and launch my own editing and writing company, which is now much stronger thanks to its latest employee.
Since he came on board, we have welcomed many more authors, given The Military Editor® Agency a major upgrade, and increased earnings—my husband and I project six-figure earnings in 2021; we have co-founded a brand-new business, Milkid Mailkit™, a pen pal program for military children with unique stationery crafted by a world-renowned theme park designer and illustrator who has also worked for Disney.
And after many years spent sacrificing family time while in the military, becoming business partners has allowed us to finally spend so much time together as husband and wife. And that is the biggest dream come true!
