Sally Roberts and “Wrestle Like A Girl” Empower the Next Generation of Female Wrestlers

In the world of wrestling, Sally Roberts stands as a powerhouse of strength, resilience, and determination. A former elite wrestler, combat veteran, and sport psychology consultant, Sally is the embodiment of the belief that girls can do anything. Her journey from the mat to the U.S. Army and beyond is a testament to the transformative power of sport and the unwavering spirit of determination.

Sally’s story is one of overcoming adversity and defying expectations. Growing up as the youngest of three children, she faced numerous challenges at home and struggled through poor decisions. However, when an officer urged her to find an after-school activity or face juvenile detention, Sally found her calling on the wrestling mat.

Despite initial setbacks and being cut from several team sports, Sally discovered her passion for wrestling—a sport that welcomed her with open arms. Through wrestling, she found a fierceness and courage that would shape her journey for years to come. Wrestling taught her the invaluable lesson of courage through vulnerability, empowering her to find strength within herself.

Her dedication to the sport led her to become a 3-time national champion, a World Cup Champion, and a World Bronze Medalist. She represented both the U.S. Army and Team USA in elite athletic competitions, proving that perseverance knows no bounds.

In her pursuit to empower the next generation of female athletes, Sally co-founded Wrestle Like A Girl (WLAG) with Amy Zirneklis. The mission of WLAG is simple yet profound: to empower women who lead through girls’ wrestling. From advocacy to empowerment camps, WLAG is dedicated to creating access and opportunities for female athletes nationwide.

As International Women’s Day approaches, WLAG celebrates a culmination of their work with the upcoming National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championship event on March 8-9th. Sponsored by WLAG, K12, USA Wrestling, the U.S. Army, and others, the event promises to be a trailblazer in women’s wrestling.
