Here are some suggestions:
1. Avoid, exit, or change the situation.
Captain Obvious here: Clearly, the best way to avoid being involved in a situation where others are mocking or manipulating is to, simply put, be absent entirely. However, since we can’t hide sweatpants-clad in our houses forever (is that really not okay?), we will, at one time or another, face those individuals who know little more than how to hurt others with their words and influence.
Well, how about it? What then?
Here’s one: Walk away. Leave. Physically remove yourself from the situation. This isn’t cowardice. This is choosing not to be involved. There’s power in having the courage to stand up and walk away.
Next, change the discourse. Influence the conversation. Lead it to another topic, far away from rude, disrespectful, and hurtful words. It takes the conscious decision to act. To decide beforehand that if the conversation becomes inappropriate or hurtful, you will know how to act.
These methods take practice. They take time to become ingrained in our behavior. But soon (very soon), others will know that they can’t mess with you. That you won’t tolerate cruelty in words or actions. And others will follow. Many need a banner to rally behind. So, if you’re ready, wave your flag, friend.
