I love being able to help other military families! With the Military Spouse of the Year title I would like to bring more attention to the National Guard families. Not being on a base, even when our soldiers are serving on active duty, makes it difficult for families to have access to resources that are more readily available to the active duty families.

I think the biggest thing is the mental health issues I talked about before. Military couples face huge challenges that civilian couples don’t. If they need marriage counseling, they cannot be afraid to go. If a soldier is having depression over a significant life change (ex. death of a parent) they should not be afraid to go for help. Mental health is not something to be ashamed of. This is the reason so many veterans commit suicide, and it is not okay. Another problem I see often is military spouses not being able to get jobs. So many professions require licensing in a particular state. Spouses move and have to pay fees to transfer the license. It takes a lot of time and money, and then many places won’t hire because they know military spouses will move. There has to be a better way for this to be done.

I would like to really inspire other military spouses to give more of their time to volunteer work. I know, I know. We are all busy with careers, home, family, and more. We lead crazy busy lives. Being military families, don’t we already give enough? It’s not that I don’t think you don’t. I just believe that volunteer doesn’t just help others, but it helps you as well. It does something for the soul, ya know? I’m not even saying spouses should get out there and commit twenty hours a month towards an organization. Just give a little when you can. Five hours per month at an animal shelter or one shift per month at a soup kitchen can go a long way. Offer a night of free babysitting to a parent that is alone. Any way you can help others!
