I love my Marine. He is smart and funny and oh-so handsome. I have seen him this way since we started dating back in high school. But you know what I always thought he wasn’t? ROMANTIC.
How many times have you found yourself wishing for a little more pizzazz in your love life? How many times have you wished to be surprised with long-stem red roses or a candle-lit dinner for two? You aren’t alone. But is that really what romance looks like? Nope, not always.
Romance is quite literally the feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love. One of the most common misconceptions about military marriage is the image of a storybook romance as a constant facet in our lives. Sometimes we fall prey to this expectation ourselves. Not every love life goes by the book. When I looked back on my own relationship over time, I realized my Marine had been successfully sweeping me off my feet for years! How did I miss that? Because he was never by the book. He has his own brand of romance.
For example, my husband has been known to bring a fresh cup of coffee to me when he wakes me up in the morning. For this, he has my heart for an eternity.
Your service member may not be romancing you textbook style, but is that something you really want anyway? A generic transaction? No way…not this close to Valentine’s Day!
