On the eve of her long awaited ballet recital, a knock echoed from the doorway. My little girl answered with excitement as the carrier handed her a rectangular box.
As soon as I saw the logo on the box, my eyes filled with tears.
Flowers.
She eagerly handed the box to me, but I motioned with my hand for her to keep them. “It’s for you,” I said through watery eyes. The excitement on her face escalated and she ripped open the box to find a note along with a beautiful bouquet of flowers signed, “With Love, From Dad.
“How did dad know?” she asked.
Though I can’t remember the exact words that I delivered her query.. I know it was something like…“Sometimes dads just know.”
Though distance and other obligations are a large factor in the physical absence of fathers in our lifestyle, their ability to parent is magnified by even the smallest of their efforts to acknowledge the accomplishments and daily activities of their children.
Are there cases where men have neglected their roles as fathers?
Unfortunately so.
Is there a surmounting majority of fathers who work hard to provide for their families, help with homework, do chores, provide counsel, water faith, increase hope and serve as a worthy role model to their posterity?
The answer is an astounding YES!
Let us fix our vision on these fathers and have them regain their place in the public spotlight.
Let us celebrate the piggy-back rides, the hours spent playing catch, lessons taught and the ever valued love exhibited by the men we so respectfully call “dads.”
As we wrap up Father’s Day Weekend, here’s a toast to our unsung heroes.
We see you, we need you and we value you.
