Your life will not suddenly be complete. Contrary to popular belief, marrying someone won’t complete you as a person. Can a marriage uplift you and make you feel more whole as an individual? Of course, but a relationship shouldn’t be confused for being the solution to all of your problems. While as a newly married couple, you adopt a new role as a spouse, you are still an individual with your own needs, wants, and struggles to overcome. It’s especially important that we as military spouses embrace our identities as individuals separate from our partners, since there will be months, or even years, when they won’t be around to hold our hand.
Plus, if you continue to pursue your hobbies and interests—and maybe even pick up some new ones—you can actually make your marriage more fulfilling by having a life separate from your spouse and new topics to talk about when you are spending time together.
