10 Things You May Not Know About Military Marriage

1. It makes you stronger “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”, “the strongest things in life are forged through fire”, there’s a million quotes out there about how life’s trials strengthen you and all of them are true of the challenges you face in a military marriage. 2. It makes you a better handyman…or handygirl ;) Military spouses don’t always have the luxury of handing their husband a honey-do list and we know if we don’t learn to fix it, it’s never getting fixed. So we put on our handyperson hat and have at it, for better or for worse. 3. It makes you appreciate each other more. People talk all the time about how hard military marriages are, but military relationships are pretty darn amazing too. All that separation from each other truly instills a sense of appreciation for your spouse and can make even the mundane everyday things feel pretty magical. 4. It makes you more outgoing. Chances are that you’re going to be the “new kid on the block” in more than one neighborhood, state, or even country multiple times during your spouse’s military career which makes you have to constantly dust off those social skills, be brave, and put yourself out there. 5. It's exciting. Moving every few years can be stressful, but it’s also exciting! How many other people get to explore the United States or even other countries as part of their lifestyle? As much as you may dread each upcoming PCS, you also can’t help but feel a little thrill at the thought of all the new and different places you’ll go. 6. It makes you communication pros. Military couples don’t always have the luxury of talking to each other face to face, or even seeing each other for months at a time, so instead they have to work harder to communicate with each other and feel connected whether it’s through video chat, letters or emails. The upside? It makes the two of you emotionally connected on a deeper level than a lot of marriages will ever get to experience. 7. It’s always an adventure. There’s always something new to discover or try in a military marriage, whether it’s a new place to move to, a new destination to explore or even a new restaurant in your new neighborhood to try together. 8. It gives you a chance to discover who you are. The military lifestyle gives you a lot of room and push for self-discovery. Whether your spouse is on deployment or you’re in a new place and haven’t made any friends yet, you will find yourself alone on more than one occasion and the best way to combat loneliness is to get out, try new things and discovery new hobbies or interests you didn’t know you had. 9. It makes you multi-talented. Math tutor, home chef, little league coach, employee, mechanic, handyman, at some point during a military marriage you will learn to do it all and more. 10. It’s still at its heart just a marriage, like any other. Although a military marriage faces unique challenges and situations, ultimately it’s like any other marriage in that it’s about two people and their love for each other that makes them willing to overcome whatever life throws at them.
