We just finished Breastfeeding Awareness Month in August, but we don’t want to stop there.

Whether you are a soon-to-be momma, a brand new mom for the first time, or 4 kids in, you have probably heard your share of breastfeeding stories, from the good to the very, very bad…

It’s totally normal to be worried about this experience – it’s something that should be completely natural, but breastfeeding for the first time can be totally weird – after all, your breasts are YOURS.

You might especially be worried if you’re in the military or are a military spouse, and don’t have the time or things you need to help make sure that this is a comfortable and rewarding experience. —> Get your breast pump through Tricare here.

Here is a good place to start:

1. Begin breastfeeding right after you give birth or as soon as possible.

When you hold your baby to your chest immediately after you give birth, you trigger your milk production and your newborn’s feeding reflexes. If you didn’t know, a lot of babies are interested in feeding and are the most alert during the first hour after they are born.

So, if you want to start off breastfeeding successfully, start feeding sooner to help keep you and your baby calm, reduce stress and, most of all, continue strengthening the incredible, indescribable bond you two already have.

2. Keep an eye on your baby and not the time.

Instead of trying to stick to a ridiculous “on-the-dot” schedule to feed your baby, focus on finding the signs that indicate your baby wants or needs to feed such as putting his or her hands to the mouth and licking lips. This way, you will make sure your baby is getting enough milk and not too little because you feed him or her at a certain time.

3. Talk to friends and family members who’ve had children.

If you are honest with your feelings and talk to other mommas, you’ll feel much more confident about breastfeeding. People WANT to help you, but they don’t know your struggling if you don’t ask.

And, if you don’t know anyone, you can always reach out to a lactation consultant – you can see one right away in the hospital!

Don’t be afraid to talk about breastfeeding – it’s getting more and more acceptable in society to talk about this natural process and that is a BEAUTIFUL thing.

At The Breastfeeding Shop, our goal is to help all mommas, especially those in the military, get breast pumps you can count on and help you have an awesome breastfeeding experience.

We offer electric pumps from brands like Medela, Ameda, Ardo, and many others. To see all of our products or learn how you can get a breast pump at no cost to you through TRICARE, take a look on our website, call here, or email here!
