Do you ever base your characters off of the people in your life?
Maybe little bits get in there…. but it’s usually a composite of lots of people rather than just one.
If you could spend one day with any character from your book, who would it be?
I’d love to spend a day with Ruth Morgan, the grandmother of all the Morgans, We’d be cooking and chatting and I’d learn so much about the history and people of the ranch. And in the evening I’d get to sit down with the whole family at dinnertime.
What is the one book you could read over and over?
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.
How long does it take you to write your books?
About three months to get it done and then another couple of weeks editing and rewriting and getting some feedback before I send it off to my editor. Sometimes, when things get busy, it might be quicker than that! Shortest time ever was six weeks I think, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
Just imagining the characters and letting them grow and develop in my imagination before I try and get them right on the page.
What advice would you give to your younger self about writing?
To be patient, because writing when you have four kids at home is hard and that things will get better when they all go off to school. 🙂
What do you like to do for fun when you’re not writing?
I love to walk my two dogs on the beach and I love to knit and watch EPL (English Premier League) soccer.
Do you have a process for working through writer’s block?
I don’t really get writer’s block to be honest. But if I’m feeling a bit stressed about my writing I find reading a lot of books and taking time out for myself is really helpful.
Do you have a favorite character trope to read? What about write?
I love Regencies and big family sagas. I love to write about forgiveness and reconciliation and family.
Do you do any hands-on research for your books? Have you had a favorite experience?
Well, as soon as I moved to the USA I learned to ride Western style and got to help out at some of the local ranches in Northern California, which gave me the idea for the Morgan Ranch series. I also spent two weeks living in Bath in the UK when I was researching for my cozy mystery series, which was very cool.
Where do you fall on the bookmark vs dog-ear debate?
Bookmark or death. 🙂
