3) Power Tools are not just for the brawny on HGTV.
This may sound trivial, but it’s not. When my husband was in the field for weeks at a time and I needed a release of energy, I’d move around the furniture or paint the walls. Money, of course, was always tight. But, trapped in a house with an infant had me itching to do something, anything. So, I bought a drill.
Honestly, I was pretty sure something was going to go haywire and I’d go blind, but I decided to live on the edge. I started with hanging a set of complex shelves, then I started to take apart furniture. Eventually, I was building furniture from scrap wood. Today, whenever I have pent up aggression, anxiety or frustration, I turn to that power drill and create something.
It doesn’t have to be a drill. It could be painting or rehabbing furniture. The truth is, we military spouses are great at creating and maintaining a home no matter how we do it and no matter where we are.
There is NO such thing as a ‘man’s job’ or a ‘woman’s job’ in the military spouse home. We mow the lawn, we change tires, we hang shelves, we make gourmet meals, we make clothing and costumes, we make gifts for those deployed, we build furniture and we build our life. One power tool at a time. We do what we have to do and we do it with panache.
