Cramped spaces, bare walls and lack-luster appearances are often adjectives the average military spouse could use to describe his/her home. By now we all know that Uncle Sam could care less about your shabby chic master bedroom dreams. When it comes to anything related to the military lifestyle, “functionality,” is key not only regarding operational tactics but average lifestyle components as well. Here are a few ways to put the FUN back in functionality when it comes to our furniture and storage needs within the home.
1. “Dress,” it up.
Surprise! Your new home comes fully equipped with ONE room that functions as an entryway and family room. How on earth will you have room for items like: the television, dvds, spare blankets and room for random items you use frequently but don’t necessarily want to walk five miles in order to retrieve? You, my friend, need to find yourself a DRESSER! Dressers come in all different sizes: tall, small, long, and short. Not only do dressers contain drawers for storage, but they also have room to spare on top.
Dressers tops can be used to display decorations, as television stands, and offer additional storage! The best part about incorporating dressers outside the bedroom– they are inexpensive! A trip to a local thrift store or yard sale will likely produce one of these storage friendly beauties. Once you have found the perfect dresser feel free to spark its appearance with your favorite color of paint or stain. Many spouses prefer the antiqued look.
2. Basket Case
Baskets are not only extremely functional, but can also be charming and aesthetically pleasing! The possibilities of what you can put in a basket are ENDLESS. To get baskets off the floor try mounting them to your wall– or even the back of a closet door.
3. Pictures With No Frames
Do you have five million pictures that don’t necessarily find their homes in frames? Do you have a wall that needs some visual love? Head on over to your community yard sale site(s) and see if anyone is selling a baby crib. The spring system for the standard baby crib can make an amazing wall display that you can spray paint. Use old clothespins to hang all your everyday photos, to do lists and art by your favorite kid artists.
