DENTAL INSURANCE: Bright Smiles, Sunny Options

The TRICARE Dental Program is an essential benefit available to military spouses.  Managed by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (MetLife), the TDP is a voluntary dental insurance program available to eligible Active Duty family members, Select Reserve and Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) members, and their eligible family members. Sponsors must have at least 12 months remaining of their service commitments at the time they or their families enroll.

The TRICARE Dental Program offers two plans, the single plan or the family plan.

Single Plan:

Under the single plan, one eligible member is covered.

Family Plan:

A family enrollment allows two or more covered family members, either active duty, Selected Reserve or IRR to access coverage. There are a few points worth noting:

If a sponsor has family members living in two or more geographically separated locations, he or she may enroll only those family members residing in one location.  Also, children under 4 may be voluntarily enrolled. Upon their 4th birthday, they are automatically enrolled, and the sponsor will be notified of the enrollment.

How do I enroll?

Enrollment is available by calling MetLife at 1-855-638-8371, or enrolling via their website. The enrollment application must be received no later than the 20th day of the month for coverage to begin on the first day of the next month. If the application is received after the 20th day of the month, coverage may not begin until the first day of the second month.

Members must stay in the TDP for at least 12 months once enrolled.  After 12 months, enrollment continues on a month-to-month basis.

What are the premiums?

You will be required to pay the first month’s premium upon enrollment.  . After the first month, monthly premiums may be paid by electronically or billed directly to the member.  Because TDP monthly premiums differ based on service status of the sponsor, as well as year to year, visit https://www.tricare.mil/Dental/TDP/Enrollment/Premiums.aspx to view the most current premium rates.

What does TDP cover?

The TDP provides 100 percent coverage for emergency, diagnostic, and preventive services.  The TRICARE Dental Program covers the following with a member cost share: fillings, root canals, crowns, extractions, orthodontics, and periodontics. TDP will cover sealants at 80% with a 20% paid by the beneficiary.  The TRICARE dental plan also includes dental implants and related prosthetics, extended restorative services to teeth affected by attrition, erosion, abrasion, and congenital or developmental defects. General anesthesia is covered at a cost share when provided in conjunction with a covered benefit.

What is the total coverage?

The Maximum annual benefit coverage is $1,200 for all routine dental care and the maximum lifetime orthodontic benefit coverage is $1,500.  Enlisted members in pay grades E-1 to E-4 have reduced cost shares for certain procedures.
