Gifts Beyond the Box
We asked spouses what they most like to give and receive. Overwhelmingly, they indicated it’s the experiences more than the things they remember and love the most. Here’s what they said:
“A couple of years ago we asked family for things to do – gift cards to local restaurants, science activity kids we could do with the kids, gift card for local museums and tours, as class of some sort … that type of thing. Memories last way longer than the newest electronic device, a toy they lose interest in or a knick-knack that breaks.” ~Natasha Harth
“Time. Honestly, whenever my husband asks what I want, that’s all I ever ask for. Spend time with me. The best ‘things’ he’s gotten me are the sweet gestures he’s made. When I come downstairs at the end of the day, tired and spent, I’m surprised with a glass of wine, the fire pit burning on the patio and a quiet couple hours of talking. Those kinds of gifts are worth more to me than anything!” ~Natalie Hayek
“My family back home and I either exchange handmade items or experiences. My brother and papa worked together and made every family a unique cutting board, took pictures while they did it and sent it to each family. I crochet things. Or we send gift cards to places to make memories.” ~Tesha Jackson
“I love experiences, so my family gives and receives gifts cards go to do things – zip lining, hotel stays, indoor sky diving, spa days, etc. Something fun for the whole family to splurge on together. For friends, a small gift we do for neighbors is a Redbox code, popcorn and candy for a movie night at home. You could even throw in a gift card for pizza delivery.” ~Kim Robertson
“One year I painted simple little 4×6 canvases for friends and family. I made them all snowman/holiday themed and tailored them to the personality of the person I gave each to. I also bought inexpensive black frames for each. Year after year I get messages shortly after Thanksgiving thanking me for that gift of personal and heartfelt seasonal décor they are able to display year after year!” ~Mary Nelson
