While I can only imagine how it must feel to get the call that your service member has been injured in the line of duty, it is a reality many military families have, and will continue to face. When this happens the first things loved ones want to do is rush to the bedside of their hero. Often times when our service men and women are injured their stay at a military or VA medical center is lengthy and it is not always in their hometown where it is easy for family to go back and forth between home and the hospital. Because of that, Fisher House has come up with a program to help families stay close during the months it could take for a wounded warrior to be released from the hospital.
Fisher House is known for being “a network of comfort homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment.” These houses are located near many major VA hospitals and military medical facilities in the U.S. Each home is set up with private bed and baths with community kitchens, laundry areas and dining rooms where all families staying there are able to get together and feel a little less alone when going through the motions of caring for hurt family members.
Additionally, Fisher House also runs the Hero Miles Program and the Hotels for Heroes Program. These two programs function on donated frequent flyer miles or hotel points to help family members get to the sides of their heroes at no cost. Thanks to Fisher House more than 28,000 families were helped in 2016 when tragedy hit home.
