Officers receive a commission from the President of the United States to lead the armed services in accomplishing their mission of defending the country. They command units from platoon-sizes to entire Armies or Naval Battle Groups. They have complete responsibility for employing, training, and caring for their unit.
Warrant Officers are promoted from enlisted ranks to lead technical units. In the Army, they are helicopter pilots as well. Chief Warrant Officers (CWO2-5) are commissioned officers.
