Help a newbie out: Imagine yourself a brand new military spouse…or maybe you don’t have to imagine. You’re not only unfamiliar with military life, but you also don’t know a soul. Enter the spouses’ club! The instant camaraderie can’t be replaced. You’ll meet other new spouses just like you and benefit from the perspective of those a little farther along in the journey.
Mentoring: So maybe you’ve been around this block of military life a few times, and you don’t feel you need a group. Don’t hide your light! Can I suggest that you, experienced spouse, have much to offer younger spouses: understanding, guidance, and a listening ear? Most groups are looking for “seasoned spouses” to serve in board positions or as volunteers. Your experience is invaluable!
Giving back: Many spouses’ groups utilize money from fundraising or operating thrift stores or other venues to fund scholarships and other charitable donations. Groups also sponsor community activities, deployed spouse events, or meals for young military members living in barracks. If you like feeling part of the bigger community, this is the place for you! Your group might do such things as support the local Fisher House, put together packages for deployed military, or volunteer for the Special Olympics. It may sound cliche, but it is truly rewarding to give back to your military and local community!
Build your resume’: It’s a surprise to many spouses that serving on a board or volunteering as a member can actually be listed on your resume’. As an advisor to several different groups, I’ve even written letters of recommendation for board members based on finances handled, managing other volunteers, and hours spent in service!
FUN: Let’s face it. The motivation for belonging to a spouses’ club isn’t always altruistic. Connecting with others, participating in fun activities, making a new friend… I hope you’ll give YOUR local spouses’ club a chance. Who knows? You might just get hooked on spouses’ groups yourself! Good luck!
